CHAPTER 20 Abraham Deceives Abimelech

1 And [²moved ³from there ¹Abraham] into the land towards the south, and lived between Kadesh and between Shur, and sojourned in Gerar. 2 [³said ¹And ²Abraham] concerning Sarah his wife, that, [²my sister ¹She is]. For he feared to say that, [²my wife ¹She is], lest at any time [⁵should kill ⁶him ¹the ²men ³of the ⁴city] on account of her. [⁵sent ¹So ²Abimelech ³king ⁴of Gerar], and he took Sarah. 3 And God entered to Abimelech by sleep in the night. And he said, Behold, you die on account of the woman of whom you took, for she is living with a man. 4 And Abimelech [³not ¹touched ²her]. And he said, O Lord, [²a nation ³ignorant ⁴and ⁵just ¹will you destroy]? 5 [³not ²he ⁴to me ¹Said], [²sister ¹She is my]; and she said to me, [²brother ¹He is my]? With a clean heart, and with righteousness of hands I did this. 6 [³said ¹And ⁴to him ²God] by sleep, And I knew that with a clean heart you did this, and I spared you for [²to not ³sin ¹you] against me; because of this I did not let you touch her. 7 And now give back the wife of the man, for he is a prophet, and he will pray for your account, and you shall live. But if you do not give back, you shall know that you shall die, you and all yours. 8 And Abimelech rose early in the morning, and he called all his servants. And he spoke all these words into their ears. [⁵feared ¹And ²all ³the ⁴men] exceedingly. 9 And Abimelech called Abraham. And he said to him, What is this you did to us, lest we sinned against you, that you bring upon me and upon my kingdom [²sin ¹a great]? A work which no one will do, you have done to me. 10 [³said ¹And ²Abimelech] to Abraham, What seeing did you do this? 11 [³said ¹And ²Abraham], For I said, Surely there is not godliness in this place, [³me ¹and ²they will kill] because of my wife. 12 For also truly [²sister ¹she is my] from my father, but not from my mother; and she became to me for wife. 13 And it happened when [²led ³me ¹God] from the house of my father, and I said to her, This righteousness you will do for me in every place of which ever I enter; there you say of me that, [²brother ¹He is my]! 14 [³took ¹And ²Abimelech] a thousand double-drachmas, and sheep, and calves, and manservants, and maidservants, and gave to Abraham, and he gave back to him Sarah his wife. 15 And Abimelech said to Abraham, Behold, my land is before you, which ever it may please you, dwell there! 16 And to Sarah he said, Behold, I have given a thousand double-drachmas to your brother, these will be to you for the value of your person, and all the ones with you; and [²in all things ¹you be truthful]! 17 [³prayed ¹And ²Abraham] to God. And God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants, and they bore. 18 For in closing up, the lord closed up outside every womb in the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah the wife of Abraham.
